'PAPER PEOPLE'
I have created a small illustrated book about an autistic child named Leo, who is starting school. The story explores the emotional highs and lows of this experience, recognising that new environments and routines can feel overwhelming for autistic children. Through Leo’s perspective, the book gently explains why these feelings occur and what a first day at school might involve, offering reassurance and familiarity.
The book is designed to support a wider audience. It aims to help autistic children feel understood, while also providing insight for neurotypical children who may have autistic siblings or peers. In addition, it offers a resource for parents, helping them better understand their child’s experiences and feel that they are represented.
Aimed primarily at children aged 3 to 5, the book is also intended to be engaging and enjoyable for adults to read aloud. This project is deeply personal, informed by my own experiences of autism and a desire to raise awareness and understanding.
